Lunge

Begin facing the tree, with your hands on the trunk. The feet should be close to the trunk — only a few inches away. Mindfully step one leg back. The toes and hips should be squared towards the tree as you bend the lead knee. Use the hands to press against the trunk as you lower the hips deeper. This will help you maintain perfect posture throughout the lunge position, and it will get you deeper into the stretch. Often times, the upper body collapses in the lunge, however the tree prevents this from happening. You can practice this movement dynamically or statically. When practicing dynamically, alternate legs. Step back on an inhalation. Then, on an exhalation, drive down through the lead heel to press back into the starting position. You can also use the hands on the trunk to help pull you back. When practicing statically, settle into a deep lunge position for several breaths on each leg. Remember to press the hands against the trunk for better posture and a better stretch.
