Sacred Saucha
A Path to Healing the World
We have all seen the trash that lines our streets and sidewalks. Many people don’t even think twice about throwing trash out of the window while driving. It may seem like the world is in disarray and like no one truly cares — with people constantly arguing about the problems, pointing fingers, and growing angrier. However, amidst the chaos, I had an enlightening moment of clarity under a pine tree, inspired by my Mom’s wisdom. My Mom is a yoga master by the way.
Throughout my life, I've made many messes, both as a child AND an adult. My Mom never chastised me for the mayhem I created; she never pointed out my mistakes or blamed me. She never brought it up to use against me, and she never made me feel bad about the situation. Instead, she lovingly and patiently helped me clean up the mess. I aspire to embody her compassion and grace.
This approach offers a powerful solution to the countless challenges we face today — including the problem of the trash that is literally everywhere! Rather than dwelling on the problems and assigning blame, may we join hands and work together to clean up the mess.
Yoga starts on the mat,
but it is finished off the mat.
Sacred Saucha is a groundbreaking grassroots movement that unites and empowers spirited trailblazers to ignite positive change. The goal is to clean up our environment and beautify public spaces while embodying the foundational yoga principle of saucha.
Have you ever heard of saucha? Many people have not. Saucha is a Sanskrit word that translates to “purity and cleanliness”. It is truly amazing that so many people know about yoga, but have absolutely no idea about saucha. With all due respect, this shows how far we have collectively strayed from the original teachings of yoga. Saucha is literally one of the most important parts! It is the first one of the niyamas (personal duties/observances), and it is the only one of the yamas (universal moral code) and the niyamas mentioned twice in the benefits section of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (Sadhana Pada, verses 35 — 45)! It clearly says that saucha is the specific yoga practice that results in the greatest benefits — including freedom from desire, permanent cheerfulness, fitness for the highest levels of spirituality, as well as mastery of focus and mastery over the senses.
