Twisting Lunge

Remember, lunges are an essential movement pattern. Lunges are something you want to practice daily. They strengthen the legs in a balanced way, and they also fix tight hip flexors. There are many different variations of lunges. This particular variation adds a twist to the mix. This twisting improves spinal mobility, and it also enhances the stretch in the hip flexor.

Begin facing the tree, with the feet close to the trunk — a few inches away. Step back with one leg and settle into the regular lunge position. Next, use the same-side arm to plant the hand on the outside of the tree. This is the part that has the potential to be confusing. For clarity, if you step back with the left leg, use the left arm on the tree. Specifically, place the left hand on the right side of the trunk. Then, use this hand as leverage to take you deeper into the twist. Practice for a couple of breaths on each side.
