How this register was selected and mapped

Indiana DNR Division of Forestry’s current champion table, retrieved October 8, 2026. All 93 populated tree rows are retained, including 10 explicitly labeled co-champions. Two empty species rows for sugar maple and Canada plum contain no county or measurements and are excluded. The page also names umbrella magnolia among species without a current champion despite supplying two populated co-champion rows; those records remain with a source note.

Common and scientific names, measurements, published points, and co-champion designations are retained. The table supplies no measurement dates or stable tree IDs. Local record identities derive from the scientific name, county, and common name, so changes to those identity fields need reconciliation when refreshing. Published scores remain unchanged even where they differ from the measurement formula.

All 93 records map to 40 approximate county points from the Census Bureau’s 2025 Gazetteer. “St Joseph” and “Laporte” are matched to St. Joseph and LaPorte, with the original wording preserved in each affected record. These points do not locate individual trees. Visiting permission is unclassified; use Indiana DNR’s current guidance before an outing.
